The appearing of Jesus is exclusively when the Lord will make Himself visible, and be seen by every eye. Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures ( 1 Corinthians 15:3). At first sight it looks like injustice. (v) Fifth, Peter sets humility. In face of all this Peter pleads for the graces which adorn the heart, which are precious in the sight of God. Common has been the opinion that Christs descent into hell is here referred to; but the words mean no such thing; for there is no mention made of the soul of Christ, but only that he went by the Spirit: and these are very different things, that Christs soul went, and that Christ preached by the power of the Spirit. The word is a somewhat difficult one; but I believe the force is that it is what conscience wants and asks for from God. Why? At the same time the general principles of God are in nowise enfeebled by Christianity, but rather strengthened and cleared immensely. And it was by this Spirit that Noah became a preacher of righteousness, and condemned that ungodly world, Hebrews 11:7, who would not believe till wrath-Divine punishment, came upon them to the uttermost. It was in this spiritual condition of perfect freedom that the preaching to the dead took place. His coming ( ) is that which effects the rapture and reception of the saints to Himself; and His appearing is that which subsequently displays them with Himself before the world, and therefore expresses but a part of His presence, being the special (not the generic) term. This passage, therefore, cannot be adduced to support the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory, because: (1)The essential ideas which enter into the doctrine of purgatory are not to be found in the word used here; (2)There is no evidence in the fair interpretation of the passage that any message is borne to them while in prison; (3)There is not the slightest hint that they can be released by any prayers or offerings of those who dwell on the earth.
